Russia's ex-defence minister stonewalls fraud case questions

Image
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Former Russian Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov refused to answer questions from investigators on Friday in a $ 100-million (62 million pounds) fraud case that has snowballed into the biggest corruption scandal since President Vladimir Putin's return to the Kremlin. Serdyukov, who was fired by Putin on November 6, remained silent because his lawyer was unable to attend due to illness, Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for the Investigative Committee, said in a statement. He will be called in again for questioning on January 11 and remains a witness in a case that is seeking to prosecute his former subordinate Yevgeniya Vasilyeva for fraud and embezzlement over several deals involving Defence Ministry property. The case, one of several sleaze scandals to flare up since Putin's return to the Kremlin for a third term as president in May, has raised questions over how much Serdyukov knew about the suspected fraud. Vasilyeva was charged on November 23 ov...

Sydney 2Day FM presenters Mel Greig and Michael Christian have been told not to comment on the matter which made international news and has been linked to the death of respected nurse and mother Jacintha Saldanha, 46, on Friday. A statement from 2Day FM's parent company, Southern Cross Austereo (SCA), said it is "deeply saddened by the tragic news". "Chief executive officer Rhys Holleran has spoken with the presenters, they are both deeply shocked and at this time we have agreed that they not comment about the circumstances," the statement said. "SCA and the hosts have decided that they will not return to their radio show until further notice out of respect for what can only be described as a tragedy." Police are not treating Ms Saldanha's...

Investigation Aims to Solve 'Missing Link' Hoax

Image
Purportedly half a million years old and a "missing link" in human evolution, Piltdown Man turned out to be a set of much younger human and ape bones stained to match and look ancient. The "fossil" influenced scientific thinking for some 40 years before the hoax was exposed in 1953. Now, a century after the bogus discovery, researchers aim to finally determine who was responsible. Chris Stringer, an expert on human origins at the Natural History Museum in London, is heading a team of 15 researchers from the museum and several universities to test the forged bones with modern methods. Writing in the latest issue of the weekly science journal Nature, Stringer said the Piltdown case remained relevant not only because of the fascinating question of "whodunit," but because "it is a warning to scientists to keep their critical guard up." He added: "On the positive side it is also an example of the eventual triumph of the scientific method....

Rip-Off Alert: Scammers love to use holiday season

Image
LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- It's the season for giving -- and for scam artists, the season for taking. Their most frequent target remains the elderly. "Scammers are often using the holidays as a backdrop to solicit people. They think people are a little more trusting during that time and a little more giving," said U.S. Postal Inspector Lori Groen. As you visit parents and grandparents this season, here are a few things to be on the lookout for. "First, look for solicitations of sweepstakes, things that say they have won fabulous prizes," Groen said. "Also, look for foreign lotteries. All foreign lotteries through the mail are illegal." Another warning from postal inspectors: Beware of offerings of so-called such valuable items as watches, gloves and jewelry. "This was something that was described as some fabulous jewelry that someone would have one in a sweepstakes," Groen said. "In reality, it's nothing but costume jewelry....

She was treated for depression and admitted to a psychiatric ward at Father Muller Medical College Hospital in Mangalore, India. Her brother Saveen, 42, said, "We didn't know about the first incident, but...

Cut Here: Gecko Tails Rip Off Along 'Dotted' Line

Image
Like a pair of Velcro stripper pants, gecko tails come off easy. The lizards have pre-formed score lines in their tail that allow them to quickly rip off their tails when a predator has grabbed it, according to a new study. The gecko tails, which were described Wednesday (Dec. 19) in the journal PLoS One, essentially stick to the body of the animals with adhesive forces . "The tail contains 'score lines' at distinct horizontal fracture planes where the tail may be released as a response to predation," the authors wrote in the article. "These scores penetrate all the way through the tissue where the structural integrity is maintained by adhesion forces." While scientists have long known that geckos and other amphibians shed their tails to evade predators (and then regenerate them later), exactly how has been steeped in mystery. One possibility was that the lizards had special fast-acting chemicals that essentially broke down connective tissue th...

She put the call through to a colleague who disclosed details of the Duchess of Cambridge's condition during treatment for an extreme form of morning sickness...

Jacintha Saldanha: prosecutors consider criminal charges over Kate Middleton hoax call

Image
The Data Protection Act offence is punishable by a fine rather than imprisonment - up to a £5,000 fine in the magistrates' court or an unlimited fine in the Crown court. A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Following the death of Jacintha Saldanha, officers have liaised with the Crown Prosecution Service as to whether any criminal offences had been committed in relation to the hoax call made to King Edward VII Hospital in the early hours of Tuesday December 4. "On Wednesday December 19, officers submitted a file to the Crown Prosecution Service for them to consider whether any potential offences may have been committed by making the hoax call." Mrs Saldanha, 46, a mother of two, was found dead in staff accommodation at the hospital where the Duchess, 30, had been treated for acute morning sickness. The nurse had answered the telephone at the hospital in Marylebone, central London, and the two presenters convinced her they were the Queen and the Prince of Wale...

Madoff's younger brother sentenced to 10 years for role in fraud

Image
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The younger brother of Bernard Madoff will serve 10 years in prison for his role in his brother's Ponzi scheme that stole billions of dollars from investors, a U.S. judge said on Thursday. Peter Madoff , 67, pleaded guilty in June to criminal charges including conspiracy to commit securities fraud for falsifying the books and records of the investment advisory company founded by his brother. U.S. District Court Judge Laura Taylor Swain adopted prosecutors' recommendations and sentenced Madoff to 10 years in prison. She also ordered him to forfeit what she called a "draconian" $ 143.1 billion, which she said would seal his "financial ruination." "To take his story at face value, he knew that the business operation was a little bit crooked, and he was content to go along with that," Swain said. "We all know that a crooked operation is rarely if ever just a 'little bit' crooked." The judge said Ma...

Facebook Powerball Hoax Guy Says It Was Just a Social Experiment, No Harm No Foul

Image
The guy that shopped a Powerball ticket earlier this month and duped millions of people into thinking he would split his winnings is finally speaking about the hoax. Nolan Daniels, a software developer, says that he never shared or liked any likebait posts and never asked anyone to – until he logged on to Facebook to see a surprising number of his friends sharing an obvious lottery hoax post. In a blog post written for The Huffington Post, Daniels explains why he decided to start the now-legendary hoax: "I myself have never shared or liked anything for that reason and I've never asked others to share or like something. Then Nov. 29, 2012, came around and I came home from work and saw people sharing a photo of a man holding a digitally manipulated photo of winning Powerball numbers to the biggest Powerball drawing that was all over the news. In the description he said that a book inspired him to pick the winning numbers and he attached a link to where you could purchase...
