PROVIDENCE, R.I. —

The U.S. Coast Guard says it's investigating possible hoax distress calls made near Narragansett Bay that prompted four fruitless hours of searching.

Coast Guard personnel in Woods Hole, Mass., received several mayday calls Thursday evening that gave no location or description of trouble. The calls were traced to Mount Hope Bay and the Providence River area.

Coast Guard Lt. Brian Swintek says two searches, one Thursday night and another Friday morning, turned up nothing. He says the searches took about four hours and cost almost $ 50,000.

Officials say there have been 23 hoax calls from a male voice off the Warwick area in the last two years. The calls have led to over 100 hours of search time at a cost of hundreds of thousand dollars.
