Philadelphia murder suspect caught after she allegedly passed phony $100 at mall
Middletown police nabbed who they thought was a woman passing counterfeit money at the Oxford Valley Mall. Turns out they captured one of Philadelphia's most wanted murder suspects, who has eluded police for more than two years.
A phony $ 100 bill is how police caught up with Nafeesah Terry, 22, of N. Preston Street in Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon.
Terry -- whom Philadelphia police called armed and dangerous -- is wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Quinta Brown in the city's Hunting Park section and the attempted murder of Sherena Williams, according to the Philadelphia police website. Both incidents happened June 27, 2010, according to police.
Investigators say that Terry had argued with the murder victim earlier; then, Terry and her brother Ashia, then 18, ran into Brown on the street. The brother and sister allegedly pulled out guns and shot Brown several times in the chest, killing her.
Ashia Terry also is wanted by Philadelphia police in connection with Brown's murder, according to the website.
Terry's life on the run came to an end after Middletown police say that she bought children's clothes with two phony $ 100 bills at the Middletown shopping mall.
Shortly after noon, Middletown police responded to a call for a woman passing counterfeit money at the Sears store. The woman and a teen boy with her had purchased $ 14 worth of items, but when the clerk tested the $ 100 bill she paid with, it turned out to be fake, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Mall security kept the couple under surveillance while they waited at a bus stop until police arrived and detained them. A Sears loss prevention agent identified Terry and her male companion as the ones who passed the fake $ 100 bill.
Police searched the pair and found clothing and store bags on both of them and a small amount of marijuana on the boy. The merchandise and change from the fraudulent purchases, including a pair of $ 20.96 pants from GAP Kids, were returned to the stores where they were bought, according to court documents.
Police also recovered the two phony $ 100 bills used for the purchases, the affidavit said.
When police went to process the arrest, they learned Terry was wanted for murder and attempted murder in Philadelphia.
She was arraigned before Middletown District Judge John Kelly Jr. on first-degree misdemeanor charges of theft by deception and receiving stolen property, and sent to Bucks County prison in lieu of 10 percent of $ 200,000 bail.
The male will be charged in a separate criminal action, according to court documents.
