MARANA - A suspicious object at a Marana apartment complex lead to some anxious moments for residents before law enforcement declared it an "elaborate hoax."

Residents at the Springs apartment complex woke up to a potentially dangerous situation this morning after police say someone walking his dog spotted the object leaning against the side of the building.

"It was shocking to see something like this," said resident Renae Polo.

Regional law enforcement and the Pima Regional Bomb Squad were called in, taping off the area and evacuating some of the residents.

"Bomb squad arrived on scene and we did find an item that was constructed to look like an improvised explosive decide...we then conducted an advanced assessment and discovered that it was an elaborate hoax," said Sgt. Chris Rogers, head of the bomb squad.

Law enforcement took every precaution, determining whether the object was a danger or not, as it was made intentionally to look like a bomb with wires, batteries, containers and a note affixed to it.

Luckily, the scare turned out to be a hoax.

"It's important to note that the public was never at risk, we have determined conclusively that there was no explosive filling," Rogers told News 4 Tucson.

This type of hoax is considered a felony in the state of Arizona. Law enforcement has opened up an investigation to find out exactly who was behind it.
