Only in India - Seven in jail for selling sand as fertilizer

Bharuch/RAJKOT: Seven people involved in adulteration of fertilizers were caught and tonnes of bogus products were seized from them. The Rajkot district collector launched a drive from September to October after getting complaints of crop damage from many farmers.

The members of the gang, who are lodged in the Rajkot jail from October 10, include bogus fertilizer manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, coordinators and members of cooperative societies from Rajkot and Surat.

The bogus fertilizers were being manufactured at a company located at Panoli industrial estate in Bharuch and three units near Rajkot. "Pankaj and Animash Kapuriya of Zebra Organics in Rajkot purchased fertilizers from different industries and then adulterated them with some other ingredients. Zebra Organics would then supply the fake fertilizers to cooperative societies," Rajkot district collector Dr Rajendra Kumar told TOI.

The places raided included Rama Fertilizers at Panoli, Rondhel Seva Cooperative Society, Khajurda Group Seva Cooperative Society and Zebra Organics. The collector has written to central and state governments to cancel their licences.

Tests carried out at a Junagadh-based government approved laboratory found that the fertilizers seized were nothing but sand.
