Website Offers Fake Girlfriend

TULSA, Okla. -- A website is offering some help in the love department.. well, in a round about way. A new website offers guys a fake girlfriend.

Users can sign up for the website to get texts from their "girlfriend." Some texts include things like "I just need someone to talk to call me," or "I miss you, honey xoxo."

To get the text messages, first you have to go to the site and register. You will get a phone number which you add to your phone as your "girlfriend," and give her a name.

Once you added your fake girlfriend to your phone, you can send a message and within minutes, she's replied.

Since the site launched in April, more than 240,000 people have used it.
That doesn't surprise psychologist Chad Johnson.

"Mostly it's about avoiding being stigmatized and feeling ashamed that you're not with somebody," he said.

Johnson said it's a little white lie for the 21st century.

"I remember as a teenager making up a story about a girlfriend from summer camp or something, you just because my friend was with somebody and I was feeling left out," he said.
Texting looks to be the perfect way to pull this off, because people assume there has to be someone on the other end to text you.

But when you give the fake girlfriend a call, you'll reach a non-working number.
Right now there is no "fake boyfriend" site, but the developer said he's working on it.
