Dozens of officers, detectives and explosives experts swarmed a Phoenix neighborhood Wednesday night after another suspicious flashlight was reported. The device was a hoax, but investigators did not immediately know that.
Phoenix police Sgt. Chris Moore told CBS 5 News the call came in shortly after 10 p.m. A woman returning to her car after leaving it parked all afternoon near 23rd Avenue and Indian School saw a yellow flashlight in the back seat. Moore said she told a friend, who took it out of the car, put it on the ground nearby and called police.
A bomb squad responded to the scene as officers kept neighbors at a safe distance.
The device was determined to not be a threat. "It was a fully-functioning flashlight," Moore said. "We would rather have people be over-cautious."
Earlier in the day the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms announced a $ 10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for leaving yellow Eveready-brand flashlights rigged with explosives at several locations around the Valley.
Three such devices have exploded in recent weeks, injuring several people. There have been multiple false alarms or hoaxes as well.
It has yet to be determined how and when the hoax flashlight was placed in the woman's car.
