Youths threw missiles, including bricks and blast bombs, at PSNI officers who were dealing with a suspect object close to the Lismore roundabout on Saturday afternoon.

A cordon line put in place by police was also removed by youths.

There are no reports of injuries.

A number of homes were evacuated in the Lismore Manor area during the alert, which began shortly before 2pm.

The road between Drumbeg and Ardowen was closed. It re-opened after the object was declared "an elaborate hoax" by army bomb experts.

Earlier, police were forced to issue an appeal for the community's support as they dealt with the suspect device.

A police spokesperson said the PSNI requested "the support of all of those with influence to advise the youths of the damage they are causing and the danger they are putting themselves and others in."

"Police would also ask parents to speak to their children and keep them away from the cordon points for their own safety."
