LCSO arrest Ft. Myers man for hoax bomb

FORT MYERS, Fla.- Lee County Sheriff's Deputies arrested 47-year-old Barry Kevin Thompson for allegedly planting a fake bomb in his own mailbox, causing a neighborhood evacuation.

On May 30, 2012, Lee County Sheriff Deputies responded to 4611 Tennessee Way in Fort Myers in reference to the location of a suspicious device. Upon arrival, contact was made with the victim/complainant, identified as Barry Thompson. The victim stated that he went out to his mailbox at around 10:40 pm and discovered a bomb like device inside. Thompson stated that he did not touch the device, but closed the mailbox and called 911.

Deputies immediately secure the area and evacuated all neighbors that were within the danger zone.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad arrived on the scene and proceeded by directing the robot to the area of the threatening device. The robot was used to take the device out of the mailbox and rendered safe. Upon the removal from the mail box the device was determined not to be a real explosive, but rather a hoax or prank.

Thompson stated that he has had an ongoing problem with the neighbors and implicated that they may be involved. Thompson provided a sworn written statement and a desire to prosecute affidavit.

The scene was deemed safe for residents to return to their homes.

Due to the nature of the crime, detectives with the Criminal Investigation Division were assigned to investigate the incident. All components of the hoax device were collected and placed into evidence for processing.

Detectives interviewed Thompson and asked him if he ever touch the suspicious package. Thompson denied ever touching the package. Thompson was advised that all components that were in his mailbox would be submitted into evidence. Thompson was asked again if he had ever touched any of the components of the hoax device. Thompson stated no and agreed that his prints would not be on any of the components.

On Tuesday, June 5, detectives made contact with Thompson at his residence. During the interview detectives eluded that Thompson may know who is responsible for the incident. Thompson stated he may have accidentally touched the device and confessed to making the device and placing it in the mailbox.

As result of the investigation into this incident, 47-year-old Barry Kevin Thompson has been arrested for Making a False Report and Threat to Bomb-Manufacture Posses Sell Deliver or Mail Hoax Bomb.
