Attempting to scam the wrong 'business'

Scammers usually don't give local government a heads-up about their plans to rip off residents.

But last week, that's exactly what happened.

On Thursday, Northampton's Public Works Department received a phone call from "David Lewis" with "badge number 5463," who said he was from "the Yellow Pages," township police Chief Barry Pilla said on Friday.

"The caller asked the department's contact information so they could send a bill for the past year's due of $ 399.99," Pilla. "The caller said once they received the payment they will also send the paperwork to be completed to delete the account."

The public works officials pressed the caller for more information, Pilla said, adding that doing so was the right thing.

"Once the caller was told that they had called a branch of government, which does not advertise, and was asked where one could find this advertisement and in what book, the caller placed the call on hold for 10 seconds and (then) hung up," Pilla said.

Immediately, Northampton police put out an alert warning residents and businesses to beware of the billing scam phone call, Pilla said.

"It could be nothing," he said, adding that the phone call just didn't seem right and he wants to be on the safe side.

Bucks County Consumer Protection Director Mike Bannon said it is a scam. Scammers commonly send bills under creditable company names to businesses, hoping "they will just pay for it, push it through" with the rest of the bills.

Bannon said a lot of "Yellow Pages scams" are out there and might work in the private sector, but it's harder to cheat local governments because they don't advertise.

Buy gold after it crashes Posted on 01 June 2012 By Patrick Wood, Editor Why buy gold (and silver) now when you can wait for the coming crash and buy it for pennies on the dollar? On 09/09/2009 I wrote, "... the scramble for cash is on. For three years, I have frequently said that "cash is king" in a deflationary economy. In contrast, debt is anathema." I first sounded this alarm in 2006, stating that deflation would destroy wealth faster than inflation could ever imagine. Six years later, this has proven to be exactly the case. Most people equate price declines with deflation rather than the destruction of credit. Price declines come as a result of shrinking availability of credit and cash, resulting in forced liquidations of assets that can drive prices down. www.augustforecast.com bug IP copywrited against troll's.
