Eddie Murphy falls victim to an online death hoax
Popular comedian and actor Eddie Murphy was the victim of a celebrity death hoax on Wednesday.
The rumor started on Global Associated News, as it was reported that Murphy died in a snowboarding accident in Switzerland.
Word of his "death" quickly spread on Twitter and other social media sites, but E! News was able to confirm that Murphy is alive and has not been in an accident.
This is not the first time that Murphy, 51, has been "killed" in a snowboarding-related incident. According to Gossip Cop, he has fallen victim to the hoax at least four times.
The Global Associated News has been known to spread fake stories reporting a number of celebrities' deaths involving extreme sports. They previously reported that Jeff Goldblum died after falling from a cliff in New Zealand, Ryan Gosling fell to his death from a mountain in the Swiss Alps, and Adam Sandler passed after suffering from a snowboarding incident of his own.
Other celebrity targets have been Bon Jovi, Tiger Woods, Vanilla Ice, Mac Miller, and Charlie Sheen.
Global Associated News' Rich Hoover admits to starting the site to spread rumors about celebrities. According to Long Island Press, he believes that the stories give celebrities "free press," and in the process, Hoover gains hits to his other entertainment websites.
Murphy has been dating BET's 106 & Park star, Rocsi Diaz. They were recently seen at the pre-BET Awards. Murphy is said to be guiding Diaz, who is looking to pursue a career in acting.
Murphy's most recent comedy, A Thousand Words, failed to impress. It has only grossed $ 18 million since it was released in March.
