£20m credit scam of Failsworth family posing as Greggs and McDonalds executives

A family ran a £20m scam by hijacking the identities of high-profile business bosses to cheat goods from stores.

Brothers Kevin Pomeroy and Daniel Pomeroy pretended to be executives from McDonalds and Greggs in the shameless fraud – while Kevin's wife, Julie Pomeroy, helped launder the cash.

Well-known electronics firms fell for the identity fraud, which netted hundreds of items over two-and-a-half years.

The Pomeroys, and their accomplice James Chapman, used the names of bosses of the food companies to con firms including Samsung, Argos, Sanyo, Fujitsu, Sony, Marks and Spencer, Electrolux, Dyson, Staples, HMV, Cannon and Jessops, John Lewis and Smeg into sending them electricals on credit.

The items were delivered to addresses across Manchester and collected, but never paid for.

Drinks companies were also targeted in the fraud, which gave the Pomeroys a luxury lifestyle.

James Rae, prosecuting, told Manchester Crown Court that Kevin Pomeroy 'lavishly furnished' his £350,000 home, with his wife paying  the mortgage in cash.

Police also found texts between him and his wife, who drive a Range Rover  and an Audi Q5, about an 'apartment in Spain'.

Now, each of the gang is facing jail after admitting fraud offences at Manchester Crown Court.

Kevin Pomeroy, 47, of Stamford Drive, Failsworth, has admitted two charges of  conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation by pretending to be an employee of McDonalds and Greggs.

Chapman, 22, of Sycamore Avenue, Chadderton, admitted the same charges.  Daniel Pomeroy, 25, of Brierley Avenue, Failsworth, has admitted one charge relating to the Greggs fraud.

While the fraud targeted £20m worth of goods, it successfully secured £2.7m of items.

The cash was laundered through accounts held by Kevin Pomeroy and his 39-year-old wife Julie, also of Stamford Drive, Failsworth, who have both also admitted money laundering charges.

The couple, who have two children and have been granted bail, both entered their pleas in the week their Manchester Crown Court trial was due to begin.

The prosecution say that Kevin Pomeroy was the 'the main architect' and likely to be the biggest earner from the fraud, with other members paid some kind of wage for their help.

While Kevin Pomeroy admits being involved in the fraud, he denies that he came up with the plan and claims he joined when it was already up and running.

Judge Michael Henshell will rule on which version of events is to be accepted at a trial of issue set for January 22, and each of the fraudsters will be sentenced at a later date.
