Phony-check scam earns Syracuse man state prison term

Syracuse, NY - A Syracuse man is facing two to four years in state prison for making dozens of phony payroll checks and getting others to cash them for him.

Jeffrey Redding, 44, of Furman Street, pleaded guilty today before County Judge Joseph Fahey to felony counts of second-degree forgery and first-degree scheme to defraud.

Redding admitted he made phony payroll checks from local businesses from February through May 2012 and that he then recruited others to cash the checks for him.

According to Assistant District Attorney Mary Gorman, Redding would allow his accomplices to keep a portion of the money from the phony checks they cashed for him. Most of the checks were cashed at local grocery stores and corner markets, the prosecutor said.

Gorman said authorities have yet to determine the exact amount of money stolen in the scheme. But she said it involved thousands of dollars and dozens of phony payroll checks.

About a dozen other people are still facing a variety of charges as Redding's check-cashing accomplices, the prosecutor said.

Sentencing for Redding is set for Jan. 29.
