Tewksbury Police warn residents of bank fraud scam
TEWKSBURY TWP. - Police are warning residents of a possible bank fraud scam in the township involving letters purporting to be from Bank of America that request recipients' personal information, including Social Security and bank account numbers.
Officials were first alerted to the incident yesterday, Jan. 9 when patrol responded to a residence on Guinea Hollow Road for a possible fraud, police said.
On the residents' return home yesterday they reportedly found an envelope hanging from their front door that stated "Important Information Enclosed." Inside the envelope was a note purporting to be from Bank of America, police said, who explained that the letter instructed the recipient to call an 800 phone number.
According to officials, when calling the number the automated message requests the caller to provide personal information, such as a Social Security number, zip code, and bank account number.
The officer reportedly contacted Bank of America corporate security and confirmed that this is fraud, and is an attempt at identity theft.
Police reminded residents that banking institutions do not request personal information over the phone that they already have on file, and advised anyone who receives a similar letter to not call the number provided and instead call the police to report the incident.
