Tucson Police seeking persons of interest in hoax explosive found Tuesday
TUCSON - Tucson Police are continuing to "aggressively" investigate what they are now calling a hoax improvised explosive device found inside a Greyhound Bus Depot trash can yesterday morning.
Detectives have been aided by close cooperation from Greyhound staff, and are now asking the public's help in identifying and locating a vehicle of interest, captured on surveillance cameras at the terminal.
The occupants are considered persons of interest in the ongoing investigation, police say.
Sgt. Ronstadt told News 4 Tucson that at about 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, security personnel at the bus depot, located at 471 W. Congress Street, contacted police saying something resembling a bomb was in a trash can.
The depot was evacuated, and several surrounding streets were closed as a precaution.
Ronstadt told News 4 Tucson that the team performed an "on-site disruption of the device. It is designed to prevent it from exploding or detonating on its own." TPD used a low-explosive to conduct that operation.
At about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, authorities reopened the surrounding roads and announced the device was in fact a hoax, but the device did resemble an explosive device.
The Tucson Police Department urges anyone with information about the vehicle, or persons associated with the vehicle, to call 911 or 88-CRIME.
