Heiress was OK with John Edwards’ affair, but didn't want to pay for it - New York Daily News

Former Sen. John Edwards' affair with Rielle Hunter was known to heiress and donor Bunny Mellon, but she, reportedly, didn' t want her riches being used for the coverup.
Ancient heiress Bunny Mellon didn't care that John Edwards was tom-catting around, but she wasn't happy about footing the bill.
That's what the 101-year-old recluse's interior decorator told jurors Friday — sending the courtroom into laughter.
Even Edwards, who is on trial for campaign-finance chicanery, managed a smile while Charlotte designer Bryan Huffman spoke.
Prosecutors say Huffman served as a middleman in a scheme to funnel campaign donations from Mellon to a slush fund used to hide pregnant mistress Rielle Hunter.
The heiress made out $ 725,000 in checks to Huffman. They were endorsed by the wife of campaign aide Andrew Young, who kept Hunter under wraps.
Asked what Mellon thought about her riches being used for the coverup, Huffman noted that she had cheated on her first husband and would not judge someone for an affair.
"She thought maybe you should probably pay for your girlfriend yourself," Huffman said.
In May 2008, Edwards told Mellon's lawyer he didn't know Huffman — even though they had met at her estate a year earlier.
The lawyer, Alex Forger, asked Edwards about the Huffman checks a few months later, and the disgraced candidate suggested Young went rogue in hitting up Mellon for money.
By the fall of 2008, Forger had learned the feds were looking into Edwards' campaign and he spoke to the Democrat's lawyer about the checks again.
"I knew Mrs. Mellon was not buying furniture," he said. "Was this a scam?"
He said Edwards' lawyer told him the politician knew Mellon's money was used for "his benefit."
