Student Union targeted in bomb hoax

PoliceA bomb scare at Cambridge University Student Union turned out to be a hoax.

Cambridgeshire Police evacuated 30 people from the New Museums Site on Downing Street in the city centre after they were called with reports of a bomb threat shortly before 2pm today. (May 15)

The university security got people out from the Student Union, Godwin Laboratory and a photographic department before police cordoned the area off and searched the building.

A Cambridgeshire Police spokesperson said: "We received reports of a possible bomb threat just before 2pm at Cambridge University Student Union.

"Officers are at the scene carrying out further examinations."

Officers found that it was a hoax and academics and staff were able to return to the building just before 3.30pm

Tim Holt, a spokesman for Cambridge University, said: "The situation is back to normal now. People are back on site as it was found to be a hoax.

"About 30 people were evacuated in total."
