The American Association of Retired Persons hosted a "Scam Jam" event Monday in Burien in an effort to help alert seniors to the myriad of scams aimed at the elderly,
The Scam Jam, held from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Criminal Justice Training Center on 1st Avenue South, partnered the AARP Fraud Fighter Call Center with consumer advocates. The event provided educational and entertaining programs on how seniors could avoid schemes such as Medicare fraud, insurance and investment fraud, identity theft, and some other leading scams targeting consumers.
According to a study conducted by the AARP, people over 50 years of age are especially vulnerable to consumer fraud and account for more than half of all fraud victims. The AARP's Fraud Fighter Call Center Director Jean Mathisen said sophisticated scam artists work hard to come up with new schemes to trick the most vulnerable.
"It's important to keep up to date on the latest scams and schemes to help protect you and the people you care about," Mathisen said.
The free event was hosted by AARP Washington, the AARP Fraud Fighter Call Center, the U.S. Administration on Community Living and other groups.
