Bomb threat hoax disrupts Rexburg Walmart store

REXBURG -- A bomb threat forced the evacuation of the Rexburg Walmart store and two other businesses for nearly 90 minutes early Saturday evening before police confirmed what they had suspected.

It was all a hoax.

Still it caused a disruption as numerous law enforcement officers arrived along with a fire truck and ambulance from the Madison Fire Department. Customers were ushered out of the store and the area was taped off, according to witnesses.

Vickie Huttinger was finishing her shopping when police arrived.

"We were just leaving when the police surrounded the store and told everyone it was a bomb threat," she said.

It all started when Walmart managers reported receiving a phone call at the store from an unidentified male shortly before 5 p.m. on Saturday. The caller said there were two bombs, each placed in backpacks in separate locations in the store.

Police were notified immediately and Walmart managers began evacuating the store. When police arrived, they ordered the evacuation of Payless Shoe Source and Sally's Beauty Supply in addition to Walmart as a precaution.

A bomb dog was summoned from Idaho Falls and the store was searched where the alleged backpacks were said to be.

The search turned up nothing, and around 6:20 p.m. police gave the all clear and stores were re-opened.

The result was what police had suspected early on, said Rexburg Police Lt. Corey Foster.

"But we did take it seriously," Foster said. "You just never know."

When police traced the number that was called in to Walmart, it was linked to a Voice Over Internet Protocol IP address, leaving police no way to trace the call.

It's similar technology to initiate several bomb threats to Walmarts throughout the country, this year alone.

A voice recording on the line said, ""If you feel this is a hoax, contact your local law enforcement."

Foster said the investigation will continue, but the people behind these types of threats can be very difficult to catch.
