Floor price dumping a cruel hoax, Hunt
The federal government's dumping of the carbon floor price is a cruel hoax for consumers, the opposition says.
The government scrapped the proposed $ 15 floor price on Tuesday for its emissions trading scheme due to start in mid-2015.
Instead, Australia's scheme will be linked to the European carbon market from July 1, 2015.
The budget bottom line could be affected if the international carbon price remains low - it's currently just under $ 10 a tonne - because of the potential impact on commonwealth revenues.
Businesses would pay less to pollute, although Australians would still receive guaranteed compensation via tax cuts and increased welfare payments.
Climate Change Minister Greg Combet is convinced there won't be a budget black hole down the track and is standing by Treasury modelling predicting an international carbon price of $ 29 a tonne in 2015/16.
But Opposition climate change spokesman Greg Hunt says the change shows a 'genuine pattern of chaos and confusion' within the government.
He says the government is saying the carbon price won't change as a result of the decision, but the Greens are predicting the carbon price could reach $ 50 by 2015/16.
'The government itself is setting up a hoax, a cruel hoax for consumers,' Mr Hunt told ABC radio on Wednesday.
'Electricity prices will continue to go up.'
Mr Hunt reiterated the opposition's plan to scrap the carbon tax.
