Hoax 911 caller takes plea deal
A 23-year-old Lincoln man who marshaled police, deputies and state patrol for a March hoax pleaded no contest Tuesday to felony criminal mischief, making terroristic threats and an unrelated charge of violating a protection order.
Troy Lee Smith on March 27 called 911 pretending to be someone else and said a man was threatening to shoot people and set fire to a house on the 4000 block of Northwest 54th Street, according to court documents.
Smith went on to say the man shot a woman, tied a rope around a child's neck and held other people hostage within the home.
Authorities quickly descended on the house but saw no flames and heard no gunshots. They forced entry through the front door and confirmed the house was empty.
Police honed in on Smith as a suspect in the hoax after they called the number used to make the initial report. A man who sounded like the caller answered and identified himself as Smith.
Authorities on that day checked other Lincoln area addresses associated with Smith but didn't find him.
Law enforcement officials eventually tracked him to Arkansas, where he was staying at a relative's house. He was arrested and extradited back to Lincoln.
As part of Smith's plea deal, the Lancaster County Attorney's Office dropped two additional charges of terroristic threats, amended the violation of a protective order from a felony to a misdemeanor. The prosecutor Tuesday also dropped an unrelated charge of forgery of a certificate title.
Smith is scheduled to be sentenced next month.
