Teesside's hoax 999 calls revealed

A MAN who rang police 23 times wanting a lift home was one of thousands of people who made malicious and hoax 999 calls on Teesside last year.

Cleveland Police has revealed details about nuisance 999 calls including one from a 17-year-old girl falsely claiming there was a bomb in Middlesbrough town centre.

Her call on June 7 this year led to a major police operation but turned out to be a hoax.

She had also made five hoax calls days earlier. She was arrested and charged and received a nine-month youth offending team referral.

The force has seen a 35% increase in the number of nuisance calls they receive. Between August 2011 and July 2012 they received 4,778 malicious and hoax calls compared to 3,549 the year before.

Earlier this year a man rang 999 a total of 23 times demanding that police give him a lift back to his Stockton home as he walked from Hartlepool.

He was charged with wasting police time and was ordered to pay £85 costs and was given a community order until July next year with a supervision requirement.

Chief inspector Steve Jermy said: "When we receive calls that are disconnected, we contact service providers and undertake work to trace the caller and then take the appropriate action against them.

"In cases where callers persistently abuse the 999 system, we work with our partners to address any issues that they may have and again the appropriate action is taken."
