Image
Courtesy of explorevancouverisland.com Web reporter Q13 FOX News Online 3:21 p.m. PDT , August 31, 2012 VICTORIA, BC— The Province reported that police have determined that three shoes found on a Victoria beach were a hoax. The shoes had a "meat-like" substance in them, but turned out to be nothing, police told the paper. Two of the shoes looked to be children's shoes and were discovered Thursday on Clover Point. Victoria police spokesman, Const. Mike Russell, told the Province that it was a "pretty sick" hoax to put the community through. He said that police will not tolerate incidents such as thing and that the people who pulled the hoax need to be found. In the last five years, nine shoes have been found with human remains inside of them along the shores of British Columbia. There have also been two other hoaxes, the paper reported. Fake Bigfoot Accidentally Killed By Motorists In Con Gone Wrong [Hoaxes]

Image
Travis Okulski View Profile Twitter RSS While Bigfoot has been spotted for decades in the woods around the United States, almost every single video has been proven to be a hoax. This weekend, another attempt at a hoax went terribly wrong when a man in a Sasquatch costume was hit by two cars and killed. The man, identified as 44-year old Randy Lee Tenley, was wearing a suit that would make him look like Bigfoot. Friends said that he was planning a hoax. Unfortunately, that plan went very wrong when Tenley went onto Highway 93. He was hit by two teenaged drivers that couldn't get out of the way. The impacts proved to be too much and Tenley died from his injuries. The police aren't sure why anyone would wander onto an active highway in camo like that, even for a hoax. They are awaiting toxicology re...

People across the nation are experiencing those problems. Locally, some merchants have been breached and bank account numbers have been compromised. ANB officials say scam artists are becoming smarter and more creative, but that their bank is one of many that are working proactively to educate customers and make sure fraud is something you won't have to experience. Bill Cosby not dead; hoax starter gloats over troll-fest

Image
Bill Cosby must be getting used to being "dead." The most recent death hoax around the comedian — courtesy of an "R.I.P. Bill Cosby" Facebook page that has more than 300,000 likes since Sunday — garnered only a tweet of a trademark sweater from the man himself, and no mention whatsoever of the scam, which is a distinct change from Cosby's reaction to a hoax that trended back in 2010. Perhaps Sunday's hoax never even hit his radar. PHOTOS: Celebrity death hoaxes The August 2010 incident, in contrast, saw Cosby taking to Twitter and CNN to debunk the fourth such Internet assault on his existence. "Emotional friends have called about this misinformation," he said at the time on Twitter. "To the people behind the foolishness, I'm not sure you see how upsetting this is." Talking to CNN in 2010, he said: "Maybe psychiatrists will say I'm feeding [the rumor starter's] ego, but I just want to say to friends of tha...

The 73-year-old Cosby Show star is not dead -- just the latest unfortunate victim of an internet death hoax. Rumors of the actor's demise surfaced Monday when Facebook user Jonathan Gorman created a group page on the social networking site called "R.I.P. Bill Cosby." The site quickly garnered 315,000 likes, causing Cosby to take to Twitter to dispel rumors of his own death. PHOTOS: Stars gone too soon "I've never met anyone who didn't like this one!" the actor tweeted, along with a pic of him in character as Cliff Huxtable wearing one of his brightly-colored sweaters, continuing his postings of memorable looks from the '80s comedy. Mars Fake Day Lives On In The Year Of Curiosity

Image
Today, August 27, has come to be known in some circles as Mars Fake Day, and with the Mars Curiosity rover in action, there's plenty of room for hoax. The hoax, however, comes from well before Curiosity's time. It originated in 2003, when an email got passed around, claiming that Mars would look as big as the full moon to the naked eye on this day. The email continues to surface each year, and some are receiving it once again this year. According to Space.com, it may have "begun in innocence" back in '03. They have an article out today explaining the email's history. In that, it says: That year, the email message (of unknown origin) correctly stated that Mars and Earth would converge for their closest encounter in around 60,000 years on Aug. 27. The distance between the planets contracted to 34.6 million miles (55.7 million kilometers) on that date, a mere fraction of their average separation of 140 million miles (225 million km) and, indeed, the c...

'Jury duty' phone scam makes the rounds

Image
They're at it again. As soon as consumers start to pick up on scam artists' tricks, the fraudsters devise another way to steal personal information. This time, it's a phone call saying you've missed jury duty -- and you could go to jail. According to a press release from the office of the attorney general in West Virginia, a telephone scam has come into circulation throughout the state. The scam involves tricking people into thinking they have missed jury duty.  The targeted consumers reported that an automated message claims to be from a federal or state court, and tells them that there is a warrant out for their arrest. The victims are then told they can evade jail time by paying a fee over the phone using their credit cards. Attorney General Darrell McGraw warns consumers against giving out personal information over the phone or internet, including dates of birth, social security numbers, credit card numbers, or any other personal account numbers. Jury du...

Russell Brand Still Alive and Kicking, Responds to Death Hoax Via Twitter

Image
Jon Furniss/WireImage.com Russell Brand just became the latest victim of a celebrity death hoax. Rumors began to circulate Saturday that the 37-year-old Arthur star had died, after Global Associated News posted a story saying Brand passed away in Switzerland when he lost control of his snowboard and struck a tree. And the Brit couldn't help but to crack a joke (and confirm the death hoax was just that) when the story made its way to him.  Russell Brand: "I'd rather be a drug addict" "Bloody hell. I better cancel the milk," Brand tweeted Saturday, along with a link to the fake death post. The self-proclaimed fake website appears to have a thing for offing celebs via snowboarding accidents. Just last month, Global Associated News posted a story saying Brad Pitt died the same way Brand supposedly had—after losing control of his snowboard and striking a tree in Switzerland. Perhaps it's time for the site to get some new material. Rus...

‘Mars Hoax Day’ Makes It Yearly Debut, The Facts About The Red Planet On August 27

Image
When Aug. 27 rolls around each year, many are led to believe it is "Mars Hoax Day," a time of year when the Red Planet comes so close to Earth that it appears as large as the full moon in the night sky. The hoax is just that, however. A hoax. The "Mars Hoax Day" first originated in a mass email thread on Aug. 27, 2003. The widely circulated document promised the view of Mars from Earth would be "spectacular" and a one-time opportunity to see the Red Planet up close and personal. "The Red Planet is about to be spectacular," the email said, according to NASA . "Earth is catching up with Mars [for] the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. On August 27th ... Mars will look as large as the full moon." In 2005, however, NASA debunked the rumors in a post entitled, "Beware The Mars Hoax." "Here are the facts: Earth and Mars are converging for a close encounter this year on October 30th...

Hoax parking tickets alert

Image
Aug. 27, 2012, midnight A HOAX  parking fine ticket didn't tickle the funny bones of  Warrnambool City Council officers who have warned the prankster could face criminal charges. The notice placed on a vehicle windscreen last week had authentic-looking features including a council logo, notice number, date and time of offence, officer name and badge number and the make, model and plate number of the vehicle. It  also included a bogus 'list of offences' such as 'too stupid to drive a car' and 'operating under the influence of rap music' and issued a $ 100 fine. Council's health and local laws manager Murray Murfett said most locals would be able to identify the fine notice as a hoax but the elderly or visitors, particularly international tourists,  could mistake it  for an authentic ticket. Mr Murfett said impersonating a council officer and unauthorised issuing of notices on vehicle windscreens were criminal offences punishable by la...

Editorial: It's ok to be a rip off (as long as you're good at it)

Image
Recently Hideki Kamiya, exec at critical darling Platinum Games and director of Okami, made news when talking about Sony's PlayStation All-Star Battle Royale. To quote Kamiya, "It's just a rip-off." And as someone who has given over roughly 200 hours to the multiple games in the Super Smash Bros franchise, I feel safe in saying Battle Royale is clearly the result of someone within Sony wanting a Smash Bros of their very own. But Kamiya and others would be better served embracing an attitude I recently adopted. So many great games have "ripped off" other hits, why can't we all give Battle Royale a chance to prove how well it can learn from another game's success? http://www.gamesradar.com/editorial-its-ok-be-rip-long-youre-good-it/ Now, when I use the term "rip off," don't mistake it for games that share a genre. If that were the case, every 2D platformer rips off Super Mario Bros, every other puzzle game is a counterfeit o...

Phony drug agents steal marijuana from Hilmar home

Image
HILMAR -- Merced County sheriff's officials this morning were looking for four suspects who posed as narcotics investigators and robbed marijuana from a Hilmar man at gunpoint Thursday night. The armed robbery occurred shortly before 8 p.m. at the man's home in the 23000 block of American Avenue, between Faith Home and Tegner roads. The four suspects arrived at the home in two vehicles and told the man they were with the Drug Enforcement Administration, said sheriff's spokesman Deputy Tom MacKenzie. The suspects said they were at the man's home to check on his marijuana plants and ensure he was in compliance with state law. After the man took the suspects into his marijuana plants, the suspects pulled out handcuffs and a handgun and handcuffed him. MacKenzie said the suspects then harvested about 20 mature marijuana plants, throwing them in the back of one of their vehicles. One of the suspects went inside the house and found a handgun, which they took. ...

Call for Action: Jury summons scam in Lee County

Image
LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- Most of us dread the idea of jury duty but it is our civic duty.  A warning about a hoax that may have you headed for the courthouse when you don't have to go.  Call for Action Investigator Genevieve Judge explains. If you're a Lee County resident, most likely you've received a jury summons to go to the Lee County Justice Center.  But Call for Action uncovered a hoax that almost left one woman, who thought she was doing the right thing, in trouble with her boss. "I got a phone call and a voice mail that said I needed to show up for jury duty," said Shelley Safly, jury scam victim. And with that call, Safly showed up on the day and time she was told to. "When I showed, there was not a civil jury that day or federal," said Safly. Safly had been, had.  Call for Action discovered it's part of two separate hoaxes going on involving Lee County residents. "Its just a silly joke but its just an unfortunate disrespectful, I thin...

Samsung likely copied Apple, but is every smartphone ever an iPhone rip-off?

Image
BY ANDY IHNATKO August 23, 2012 4:52PM storyidforme: 35793101 tmspicid: 11278853 fileheaderid: 5152164 Updated: August 23, 2012 5:49PM At this moment, jurors are deciding whether or not Samsung, while developing its own line of multitouch smartphones, decided to just rip off Apple and copy ideas off of the iPhone. I suspect that it's going to be a long deliberation, as these men and women sort through the previous weeks of testimony and exhibits, and then weigh the two possible answers to that question: it's either "Yes, they did" or "Oh, [expletive] yes!" Honestly. That Samsung has been copying Apple to one degree or another has been plain from its first Android phone. Two modern mobile devices from two different makes are naturally going to have the same suite of baked-in apps for contacts, calendars and communications ... but the first-generation Galaxy S showed, shall we say, a brave amount of iPhone influence. Oh, Samsung. ...

Arson and hoax calls increase - Cleveland Fire Brigade

Image
ARSON and hoax calls have both increased in the past year, according to figures released by Cleveland Fire Brigade. It comes as the service faces 25% cuts in its Government grant over the next four years - resulting in almost a £9m drop in its £34m budget. Cleveland Fire Brigade released the data in its Service Plan Summary for 2012/13, which show that last year they received 4,231 calls, compared to 4,134 the year previously. During this time there were six fatalities and 39 injuries compared to two fatalities and 31 injuries in 2010/11. And the number of deliberate fires jumped by 19% during the same period - from 2,538 in 2011/12 to 3,029. Figures show that both Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland saw a 34% rise in the number of arson incidents, while Stockton saw a 3% and Hartlepool a 12% increase. The figures come as the Cleveland Fire Brigade launched its Enough is Enough campaign, to stamp out arson, and revealed that the fire at a wood recycling plant at Port...

Is Denzel Washington Dead? Actor Falls Victim To The Latest Twitter Death Hoax

Image
Is Denzel Washington dead? No. But the veteran actor is the latest victim of a death hoax orchestrated by Twitter . Washington, star of "Man on Fire" and "Malcolm X," is alive and well. The incredibly dubious "news" outlet Global Associated News began spreading the story to Twitter , claiming that Denzel Washington met his end after a snowboarding accident. "The actor & novice snowboarder was vacationing at the Zermatt ski resort in Zermatt, Switzerland with family and friends. Witnesses indicate that Denzel Washington lost control of his snowboard and struck a tree at a high rate of speed," the site claimed. Of course, no credible news outlet has reported on the obviously false story, but that hasn't stopped Twitter users from "memorializing" the beloved actor with tweets about his supposed demise. "Denzel Washington died?! :( #snowboardingaccident," read one tweet from user ‏@sillyJenelleee. The twe...
