Scam artist in Amarillo, keep their hands out of your pocket

There are a lot of positives in the evolution of technology. Unfortunately, it comes with negatives, too. Some of those involve new bank account scams.
Officials from Amarillo National Bank call them "modern day bank robberies," and they can come in different forms. The most common types of fraud they see involves debit cards and checks.
People across the nation are experiencing those problems. Locally, some merchants have been breached and bank account numbers have been compromised.
ANB officials say scam artists are becoming smarter and more creative, but that their bank is one of many that are working proactively to educate customers and make sure fraud is something you won't have to experience.
ANB Vice President William Ware said, "First thing is minimize your risk through education, make sure you know your transactions, get online banking, get internet banking, look at your transactions. Don't give your card number to anyone who doesn't need it."
Scams are constantly occurring and everyday new tactics are being experimented with. Officials say to be cautious of suspicious phone calls, text and e-mails.
"We'll never ask you for your credit card or debit card number. We have that information, we'll never ask you to verify anything. If you call into the bank we have ways to identify you," said Ware.
He and other bank officials also suggest that if you are suspicious of any activity; call your bank directly for verification. Locally, those who have been affected by the breach have been contacted and issued new cards.
