Hoax parking tickets alert
Aug. 27, 2012, midnight
A HOAX parking fine ticket didn't tickle the funny bones of Warrnambool City Council officers who have warned the prankster could face criminal charges.
The notice placed on a vehicle windscreen last week had authentic-looking features including a council logo, notice number, date and time of offence, officer name and badge number and the make, model and plate number of the vehicle.
It also included a bogus 'list of offences' such as 'too stupid to drive a car' and 'operating under the influence of rap music' and issued a $ 100 fine.
Council's health and local laws manager Murray Murfett said most locals would be able to identify the fine notice as a hoax but the elderly or visitors, particularly international tourists, could mistake it for an authentic ticket.
Mr Murfett said impersonating a council officer and unauthorised issuing of notices on vehicle windscreens were criminal offences punishable by law.
"Clearly someone with too much time on their hands has done this for a bit of a laugh, but they won't be laughing when they get caught," he said.
"It would be very easy for an elderly person or anyone with impaired vision or limited English to mistake this for a real fine and we don't want this to cause undue stress to anyone."
Mr Murfett said anyone who received a hoax fine should disregard the notice.
He encouraged anyone with information about the source of the hoax fines to call council on 5559 4800.
