Moose Jaw police warn about 'bank inspector' scam
Moose Jaw police are warning the public about the bank inspector scam, a particularly brazen form of fraud that took place recently near a local bank.
In the scam, a well-dressed person approaches the victim — often a senior — and claims to be a bank inspector.
The 'inspector' asks the victim to withdraw money from his or her account as a way of testing the bank's procedures or security. The fraudster then leaves with the money.
Such fraudsters may also ask for banking information such as account numbers and account totals.
"This person is very persuasive stating that by withdrawing money from their account it will help the bank out in the investigation," the Moose Jaw Police Service said in a news release.
In the Moose Jaw example, police said the target — a senior citizen — was immediately suspicious of the phone call she received, seeking her co-operation with an inspector, and checked with her bank manager.
She was told the bank had no such quality assurance program and was asked to relay her information to police.
Police said no money was lost in the attempted scam.
Police were continuing to investigate. Anyone with information was asked to call them at (306) 694-7600 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
