Miley Cyrus not home during hoax kidnapping, shooting call

No one was around at the Studio City home of singer and actress Miley Cyrus on Wednesday evening when Los Angeles police descended on the residence in response to what they thought was a potential shooting and hostage situation.

And LAPD officials said that was a good thing.

Given the gravity of the hoax call that sent officers to the home in the 11000 block of Amanda Drive about 6:50 p.m., there was significant potential for injuries to civilians or first responders.

"A home invasion is one of the most intense crimes you can respond to," said LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith. "The possibility of armed suspects puts our officers in a high-risk situation, which could have disastrous results."

It turned out to be a hoax but at least a dozen officers and firefighters responded to the scene. Police believe the call might have originated from a cellphone.

Smith said the caller faces arrest, criminal prosecution and possibly civil penalties for abusing the 911 system.

"This is not a harmless prank," Smith said.
