Canby bomb hoax not linked to December's fatal pipe-bomb blast

CANBY -- Police said there is no connection between a bomb hoax Saturday and a pipe-bomb explosion that killed a 31-year-old man last year.

Saturday's hoax began with a call to emergency dispatchers around 11:30 a.m., reporting that a bomb had been placed on Oregon 99E near North Grant Street, in downtown Canby. Arriving officers found a box full of what looked like several sticks of dynamite. Wires were sticking out of the box and the top said "TNT" in black letters.

In addition, the box contained a gas mask.

Canby police then called in the Metro Explosives Disposal Unit. Meanwhile, Oregon 99E was closed in both directions while bomb technicians analyzed the contents of the box.

"Better to have experts look it over than to place ourselves and everyone else in danger," said Police Chief Bret Smith.

Smith said there was no identified link between the hoax and the Dec. 11, 2011, pipe-bomb blast that killed Ivan Velasco Rodriguez, a 31-year-old father of four who inadvertently opened a booby-trapped tool box. The case remains unsolved, but investigators continue to work on leads.

Velasco Rodriguez and his business partner had dropped by the house at 591 N.E. 22nd Ave. around 6 p.m. to pick up some scrap metal they planned to salvage. When Velasco Rodriguez opened a toolbox he found in the driveway, it exploded, leaving him critically injured. He died on the way to the hospital.

The blast was so violent that it shook nearby homes and could be heard several blocks away. However, neither the adjacent house nor nearby vehicles were damaged. No other injuries were reported.

The explosion spread debris over a four-block area, which was picked over by investigators. About 500 pieces of evidence were collected and documented in the days after the blast.

Police and the federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms have posted a $ 5000 reward for information leading to the arrest of whoever made or placed the pipe bomb: 800-800-3855.
