Hijack Fake Sentence Handed Down In India, Life In Prison For 2009 Incident

Image
A hijack hoax sentence in India has been deemed by some as too harsh, as the Indian man convicted in the crime has been sent to jail for life. The hijack hoax sentence follows a 2009 incident involving 45-year-old Jitender Kumar Mohla on an an IndiGo Airlines flight in February 2009. Mohla is said to have threatened the passengers and crew on the IndiGo plane, saying he had armed himself with infected needles and a gun for reasons that remain unclear to this day. A news report indicates that the hijack hoax sentence was sparked by an incident that created significant headaches for crew and passengers on the plane and required extensive on-the-ground follow-up after the plane was diverted. "Mohla was convicted last week on charges of endangering the safety of others and intimidating the pilot and crew while the aircraft, which was headed from western Goa state to Delhi, was mid-air with around 160 passengers on board … The threat created panic among the passen...

Hitchhiker pleads guilty to Mont. shooting hoax

Image
BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A hitchhiker from West Virginia pleaded guilty Monday to criminal charges in Montana for falsely claiming to be the victim of a drive-by shooting, leading to another man being jailed for an offense he did not commit. Under a plea deal with prosecutors, Ray Dolin of Julian, W.Va., would receive a six-month suspended jail sentence and have to pay more than $ 2,000 in fines and $ 5,583 in restitution to the Valley County Sheriff 's Office. Dolin pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence, making a false report and obstructing a peace officer during an appearance before state District Judge John McKeon in Valley County . Sentencing was set for January 22. The struggling photographer has admitted to shooting himself in the arm on June 9 while hitchhiking near Glasgow in northeastern Montana. He initially claimed it was a drive-by shooting and stuck with that story even when a Washington state man was arrested and jailed. After his tale unraveled a...

Grandma, please get me out of jail! Silicon Valley elders warned about this scam and other fraud.

Image
Selma Corman knows all about one of the most popular scams designed to rip off older Americans. When a Santa Clara County prosecutor mentioned the notorious "Midnight Call" scheme at a meeting Sunday afternoon, she nodded her head and raised her hand. "I got one of those," she said at Congregation Beth David, a Jewish synagogue in Saratoga. But hardly anyone heard her because many in the crowd of about 100 blurted or mumbled the same thing. Corman later remembered the call in remarkable detail. "I get this call in the middle of the night about three months ago," the 83-year-old from Sunnyvale said. "It's my grandson. He's crying. He's in a jail in Mexico and needs money to get out." In short order, her grandson pleaded with her not to tell his parents. He handed the phone to an older man, his lawyer, who tells Corman she has a half-hour to send $ 1,900 to a Western Union office in Mexico City. She had to rush the money tr...

Image
GLASGOW — Kentucky State Police said the Monroe County bomb scare that occurred Thursday was a hoax. "We know it's a hoax because we found no devices and there was no explosion," said Trooper Billy Gregory, public information officer for the Kentucky State Police in Columbia. The state police have not arrested anyone for making the prank phone calls, but are continuing their investigation. Gregory could not talk about the specifics of the investigation. "We hope to know something by next week," he said. The person or persons responsible for the bomb scare could face a charge of terroristic threatening, which is a Class C felony, he said. There were five bomb threats made Thursday within a few minutes of each other to three Tompkinsville restaurants — Sonic Drive-In, McDonalds and Subway, — plus one to the county attorney's office and to Tompkinsville Elementary. #BaldForBieber Hoax Teaches Kids to Fact Check Before Shaving Their Heads

Image
A Twitter hoax suggesting Justin Bieber has cancer taught teenage girls everywhere a valuable lesson this week: You should fact check before you shave your head. Or, maybe it's all just an elaborate story crafted by 4Chan. Originally posted on Oct. 22, the hoax started with a screenshot of what appears to be a tweet from Entertainment Tonight 's official Twitter account announcing that Bieber was diagnosed with cancer that morning and suggesting fans go #BaldforBieber in support of the pop icon. The photo also shows what looks to be a tweet from Bieber's official account, thanking ET for the support Shortly after the tweets, a website, BaldforBieber.com, launched showing Photoshopped tweets from the pop star thanking fans for support, as well as a number of fake news stories that seem to confirm the rumor. A YouTube video on the site's homepage shows a video of fans supposedly shaving their heads in support of the Biebs, and a gallery of photos on another...

Justin Bieber Cancer Counterfeit Tried to Persuade Fans to Shave Heads

Image
October 27, 2012 06:35:25 GMT Some fans were asked to shave their heads to support Justin, before it's proven that a rumor saying Justin suffered from cancer is no more than a hoax. Photo credit: Mr Blue/WENN 's fans don't need to shave their heads since the 18-year-old singer doesn't suffer from cancer at all. A hashtag #baldforbieber was trending for a while on Twitter, but faded as soon as people found out the truth. Kenny Hamilton, Justin's bodyguard tweeted, "No," on Friday, October 26, to reply to a friend's question, "Is it true about justin having cancer?" So far, no real Beliebers make a claim that they were victims of the cancer hoax. Additionally, the "Never Say Never" singer hasn't made any comments on it yet. Some of the singer's fans were not convinced by the hoax. A fan joked, "Shave your beaver for Bieber." Another one tweeted, "It's sad that girls are going #BaldFor...

Rip-Off Alert: Seniors targeted in sweepstakes scam

Image
LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- A man who thought he won millions actually lost almost everything. He was a victim in a scam that targets the elderly. Norman Breidenbaugh lost the home he shared with his wife for 22 years to foreclosure in a scam that started with a phone call. "They told us we won a $ 2.5 million dollar sweepstakes," he said. But first, the scammer told him to send $ 2,000 to pay for taxes on the winnings. After he agreed, they started asking questions. "They would get information from you and then they would turn it around and use it against you." Like the fact that his wife, Lucinda, was in a nursing home dying of cancer. "They would say if I just send them this money then I would get this sweepstakes and I would have the money to bring her home," he said. Desperate to make that happen, Breidenbaugh refinaced his house and continued to send payments as the crooks strung him along. In the end, he not only lost his wife to cancer. He als...

The hoax, Reddit attests, began Tuesday night when a 4channer used something to the tune of the Fake Tweet Builder to generate a tweet supposedly sent from Entertainment Tonight's verified account. "I was there when we started this," added one of the self-proclaimed conspirators, redditor ErroneousDylan. "Somebody made a few Twitter accounts, we edited Wikipedia, we spammed chat rooms, and we even posted here on Reddit (but it was deleted for lack of evidence). Italian detained in Bali over hoax threat to flight

Image
An Italian painter has been arrested on the Indonesian resort island of Bali for allegedly making a hoax bomb threat to a flight after his wife failed to get a seat on it, police said Wednesday. Andrea Giovanni Sorteni, 48, could be charged with terrorism offences over the bomb threat, which sparked panic and caused the flight from Yogyakarta in central Java to be delayed by several hours. That is anything but a death sentence." Back in August, a Facebook page called "RIP Morgan Freeman" was created and is still active up to now despite denial. Morgan's representative said back then, "Morgan is alive and well, and joins the long list of actors who have been victimized by this hoax. He's still alive and well, stop believing what you see on the Internet." In September...

U.S. sues Bank of America over "Hustle" mortgage fraud

Image
(Reuters) - The United States filed a civil mortgage fraud lawsuit against Bank of America Corp, accusing it of selling thousands of toxic home loans to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that went into default and caused more than $ 1 billion of losses. Wednesday's case, originally brought by a whistleblower, is the U.S. Department of Justice 's first civil fraud lawsuit over mortgage loans sold to Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac . It also compounds the problems that the Bank of America , second-largest U.S. bank, has faced since its disastrous 2008 purchase of Countrywide Financial Corp , once the nation's largest mortgage lender. According to a complaint filed in Manhattan federal court, Countrywide in 2007 invented a scheme known as the "Hustle" designed to speed up processing of residential home loans. Operating under the motto "Loans Move Forward, Never Backward," mortgage executives tried to eliminate "toll gates" designed to ensure...
