Man says object he saw looked suspicious

BRISTOL, N.H. —

A suspicious device that forced police to shut down Route 104 in Alexandria was determined to be a hoax, police said.

State police said a small, cylinder-type propane tank was found by the road at the Bristol/Alexandria line. Route 104 was shut down in both directions, and the bomb squad was called in to investigate

Bristol police described the device as a propane torch and a propane cylinder with multiple nails taped to its side.

State police said it appeared to be an explosive device, and it was X-rayed. But police said their investigation revealed that it was not explosive.

Police said they believe the device was intended to look like an explosive, and they called it a hoax.

The road was reopened after police cleaned up the area. Police said the investigation was ongoing.

Anyone with information was asked to call Alexandria police at 603-744-6650.
