Threat prompts massive search for chemical weapons

WARE, Mass. —

A massive search for chemical-weapons in Ware failed to turn up anything on Sunday following an anonymous call to police.

Authorities said they received the call at about 6:30 a.m. from a person who claimed to have left bombs at various places around town. Those bombs were allegedly set to detonate later in the day.

Police sent out three reverse 911 calls to residents, urging them to stay indoors while police and federal agents closed down roadways to conduct ground searches in the area of West Street, Gould Street, Anderson Street, Mountainview Drive and Brookside Manor. A command center was also set up at a local supermarket.

Resident John Yestramski said he received each of the reverse 911 calls.

"They said there's a hazmat situation going on down here and that they would notify us later when something happened," Yestramski said.

After an extensive all-day search, authorities did not find anything suspicious.

"Nothing was found in the ground search," said Ware Town Manager Stuart Beckley.
