Danville man victim of elaborate Internet hoax
Hunter Dunn and his family received quite a surprise Monday when they found out a suspected blogger in California had been using Hunter's pictures in an elaborate Internet hoax dating back to 2007.
For five years, an Orange County, Calif., suspect going by the name of Dave Rose was an Internet sensation and inspiration to thousands and used several photos of Dunn in his rouse, according to multiple news outlets. Using the Twitter handle DaveOnWheels, Rose amassed thousands of supporters — including reality television star Kim Kardashian.
The hoax also included a sister named Nichole, who broke the news of Dave's "death" on his blog late last week, news outlets reported. After the news of his death went viral, it did not take long for people to start asking questions and eventually figure out that there was no Dave or Nichole Rose.
Dave Rose claimed to be a blogger from Anaheim, Calif., who was deaf and suffered from cerebral palsy. He had multiple pictures of Dunn posted on his blog, Twitter and Facebook. Hunter Dunn's mother Linda said the blogger even had pictures that were taken as recently as April or May.
Linda Dunn said she has been told the blogger has apologized to her family, and Hunter was not targeted.
Since the news of the hoax broke, the suspected blogger has said that Hunter was not the target and his pictures were chosen at random, according to news outlets.
"For being 'at random,' they sure did a lot of research," Linda Dunn said.
Linda Dunn said she had no idea Hunter's pictures were being used until she received a call from a television station in New York. Since the story broke nationally earlier this week, Linda Dunn said she has received calls from reporters in New York and California, and her daughter was interviewed on a radio show in Charlotte, N.C.
The hoax story has been picked up by media outlets all over the United States as well as Australia. Linda Dunn said Hunter logged into Facebook after the story broke and had numerous friend requests. She said Hunter is now afraid to use his computer because he feels victimized, and he has ignored the friend requests because he is unsure of people's intentions.
"Hunter feels violated and does not want to — or feel comfortable — getting on his computer," Linda Dunn said. "He doesn't know why he was picked and feels like it has invaded his privacy."
The Dunns are not bitter about the events that have unfolded, and Linda Dunn said she is grateful that reporters made her aware of the situation. She said they are talking to legal counsel because they want to make sure Hunter is protected from this situation happening again.
