This is an elaborate scheme. Morse Moving and Storage in Traverse City had their FedEx account stolen and they were used as a front to what seemed to be legitimate, but clearly was not. "I've never seen it before, this is new to me!" Art Morse says. Morse, whose family owns Morse Moving and Storage in Traverse City, says his company was part of a ploy to steal money.  Tonight, he wants to send a warning about a new scam that starts with a purchase on a website like Craigslist. "When they buy something, they were sending out more than what the cost was, they were buying it on the internet, and they were sending out checks over and above and asking them to send a refund back...

International counterfeit goods sweep hits Valley

Image
Law enforcement in the Rio Grande Valley city of Alton have arrested three people as part of an international sweep targeting counterfeit goods during the holidays. They are among 33 people charged in Operation Holiday Hoax II, a six-week roundup during which officials in Texas, Mexico and South Korea seized 327,000 counterfeit items worth an estimated $ 76.8 million, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The ICE-led National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center worked with local and federal agencies in 66 U.S. cities as well as in Mexico and South Korea, according to ICE. Starting Nov. 1, they targeted stores, flea markets and swap meets trying to catch importers and sellers of counterfeit and pirated products. They more than doubled the seizures of the first Operation Holiday Hoax in 2009, which netted about $ 26 million in counterfeit goods. In the Valley, they seized about 110,000 items with an estimated value of $ 1.4 million that included coun...

Man charged over Melbourne siege hoax

Image
A Victorian man charged over a hoax siege in Melbourne's west has been refused bail. Kristopher Conway, 23, is charged with making a false report to police after they received three calls yesterday telling them a man with a gun was holding a woman and a child hostage at a house in Albatross Avenue. Police closed off nearby roads and sent in members of the Special Operations Group. After five hours they stormed the house, but found no-one inside. Conway, of Werribee, appeared in the Sunshine Magistrates' court this afternoon. The court heard he has severe depression and is on bail on separate charges of making a false report and impersonating a police officer. The magistrate rejected his application for bail and remanded him in custody to appear again next week. Read More @ Source Fraudulent Stories Here

£47.5m fish scam details revealed

Image
29 December 2011 Last updated at 05:13 ET Some of the 17 skippers were ordered to pay six-figure sums Details have been revealed of a £47.5m "black fish" scam which involved more than a dozen skippers and a fish processing company on Shetland. The scam allowed the fishermen to land more mackerel and herring than they were allowed under EU quotas. Scales at Lerwick-based processing company Shetland Catch Ltd were set to underestimate the weight of the fish being landed by the boats. Seventeen skippers have previously admitted their part in the scam. Earlier this month they were ordered to hand over almost £3m in confiscation orders. They are due to be sentenced next month. The BBC had challenged the reporting restrictions which had prevented the reporting of the extent of the false declarations to the Scottish Fisheries Protection Agency, and the method used to make the undeclared landings. Proper weight Weighing scales at Shetland Fisheries were linked to comp...

'Jon Bon Jovi is dead' hoaxer: 'I just kind of took the liberty' - Los Angeles Times

Image
Jon Bon Jovi was dead, did you hear? If you did, you experienced the hoax that Pennsylvania musician Jeffrey Goho has admitted he started. Goho told the Asbury Park Press on Tuesday he'd been peeved that Bon Jovi appeared to be spending his time everywhere but behind a microphone. So what better way to encourage a guy to leave the restaurant business and the movie business alone than by tweeting that he's, you know, dead. "Long story short, I was talking to my band members on their down time, and we got so worked up in the conversation, I just kind of took the liberty and started [the rumor], because I was so irritated," Goho told the Asbury Park Press. He started the rumor in mid-December on a friend's Twitter account, he said, or on a fake account, depending on whom you believe. And, gosh, who expected all that retweeting (the story of the hoax was popping for days here at latimes.com -- and along the way, one wee blog even picked up The Times' Michael...

Bon Jovi fans target rocker after hoax

Image
Jon Bon Jovi. (WENN) A bitter Pennsylvania rocker has become the target of angry Bon Jovi fans after confessing he sparked a hoax suggesting Jon Bon Jovi had died just before Christmas. Jeffrey Goho has owned up to penning a fake press release stating the You Give Love a Bad Name singer had died after falling into a coma in a New Jersey hotel on 19 December - and posting it online. Bon Jovi's representatives were quick to dismiss the hoax but not before the news reached worried fans. Now Goho confesses to the Asbury Park Press, "I'm in a band as well, and I was going into the recording studio, and we had talked about how the music industry just started taking a turn into crazy new worlds that no one, really, can assess. Long story short, I was talking to my band members on their down time, and we got so worked up in the conversation, I just kind of took the liberty and started (the rumour), because I was so irritated." But the little-known rocker admits his...

The Morning Fix: Tom Cruise rules; Taylor Lautner is target of hoax

Image
After the coffee. Before wondering how to cover the movie business this week when all the studios are closed. The Skinny: I (Morning Fix backup Ben Fritz) have returned after a week off, during which the best movie I saw was the Imax preview for "The Dark Knight Rises" (that's not a dig at other films; the preview was just that good). Tuesday's headlines include some good box-office news that doesn't make up for a weak year, a look back at an interesting TV season, and a fake People magazine cover featuring a startling revelation about Taylor Lautner. Size really doesn't matter : This fall the TV networks opened their wallets for some big bets, but found viewers were more interested in inexpensive comedies. Among the disappointments have been costly dramas "Terra Nova," "Pan Am," and the already-canceled "The Playboy Club," while comedies like "Two Broke Girls," "Suburgatory" and "Up All Night" h...

Phony Doc Botched Lipo, Flushed Fat: Prosecutors

Image
The story sounds almost too bizarre to be believed. A man posing as a physician's  assistant performs a cut-rate liposuction on a woman who is awake but anesthetized. He asks her to hold her IV bag while he works, all the while smoking a cigar. A few days later, he shows up at her house with 6 pounds of her fat and, telling her he needs to dispose of it, flushes it down her toilet. Reported first in the San Francisco Chronicle, this account was what city prosecutors allege  happened to an as yet unidentified woman and  led to the Thursday arrest of Carlos Guzmangarza , 49, on a litany of charges. Messages left  Monday, a federal holiday, with the San Francisco district attorney's office and the Medical Board of California were not immediately returned. But according to the story in the Chronicle, prosecutors allege that Guzmangarza stole the identities of a physician and a physician's assistant, which he used to operate a bogus clinic. Prosecutors said he charged only...

US cricket captain arrested for mortgage fraud scam

Image
New York, Dec 26 (ANI): US Cricket Team captain Steve Massiah has been arrested in connection with a Queens-based mortgage scam allegedly run by Edul Ahmad , a broker whose 40,000 dollars donation to Republican Gregory Meeks is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. US officials have confiscated Massiah's passport and restricted his travel after arresting him on November 22 on charges of allegedly defrauding banks and mortgage companies by falsifying mortgage loan applications . Massiah, 32, an Ahmad employee, became captain of the US Cricket Team . His passport was confiscated, and he seems certain to miss an important March qualifying tournament in Dubai. "I'm concerned," said one team official. Massiah, who did not respond to requests for comment, has entered into plea negotiations with the US Attorney's Office, court records show. Also charged were Qayaam Farrouq, 42, who plays in a New York cricket league, and Mohamed Gurmohamed, ...
