Police kill woman who allegedly sent hoax package to state senator

BREWSTER – The woman who allegedly mailed a hoax weapon of mass destruction package to State Sen. Gregory Ball's office earlier this year has been shot and killed by police in Georgia, a spokeswoman for Ball's office said Monday. Ball, R-Carmel, is the chairman of the state Senate's Homeland Security Committee.

Ball spokeswoman Brittany Oat said Jameela Barnette was killed on Christmas day when a police officer for the Cobb county Police responded to the Bexley Apartments in Marietta, Ga., and was assaulted by Barnette shortly after he opened the door.

The officer shot the woman, later identified as Barnette, who died at the scene, police said.

She was armed with a knife and gun, police said.

According to the FBI in Atlanta, Barnette was a indicted on federal charges last month for her role in mailing the hoax weapons of mass destruction package to Ball's office. The package wound up containing perfume.

Barnette also allegedly sent a package with pig's feet to Congressman Peter King's Office. He is chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee.
