Charlie Sheen 'Dead' Again; Con Deluges Web
Charlie Sheen is dead. Again. At least that's the story the Internet hoax mill is manufacturing this week.
Sheen may speak of the tiger blood that runs through his veins; after all the death rumors this year, the cat's nine lives may just inhabit this actor, too. While most have been nothing more than rumors that have gone viral, some have also been designed to deliver viruses to unsuspecting readers.
Here's a look at some recent "Charlie Sheen is dead" hoaxes:
December 2011
Sheen's most recent demise was reported as a prank from the Global Associated News. The outfit said "Actor Charlie Sheen is reported to have died shortly after a snowboard accident." One quick look at Gossip Cop and you will find that it was a hoax and that the rumor is spreading over Facebook, Twitter and any other social media outlets.
July 2011
A rumor of Charlie Sheen's death also went viral in July . This rumor was created by a Facebook link to fake stories of Sheen's death. These links were actually malware designed to infect computers. Again, however, Sheen wasn't dead.
March 2011
Back in March, the rumors began with Facebook and Twitter posts that read "Exclusive Video: Charlie Sheen found Dead at his House!" and included a link. According to ZDNet, the links were a form of "likejacking." By clicking on the link, readers were sent to a fake YouTube page. When they clicked for the video to play, they were prompted to fill out surveys to verify they were human. Still, Sheen was alive and kicking.
December 2010
Apparently December is not a good month for Sheen to be hitting the slopes because the rumor from a year ago is the second time he has died in a snowboarding accident. This one occurred on Dec. 26, 2010, and was essentially the same as the death as this week.
If our numbers are correct, this makes four deaths by the man with the tiger blood; based on a cat's nine lives, he only has five left.
