'Scareware' child porn warning a scam: anti-fraud centre

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre is warning about a scam circulating that tells Internet users their computer has been infected with child pornography and demands money to fix it.

The centre says it has received reports from people who say their computers were frozen after receiving pop-up messages warning them their computer has been associated with child porn.

These messages, which claim to be from the RCMP or CSIS, tell the recipient to pay $ 100 via Ukash, an international cash payment method similar to PayPal, so their computer can be "unlocked."

The centre says scareware such as this is designed to create so much anxiety that victims respond by sending money quickly.

Last November, Ukash posted an alert on its website about a similar scam targeting residents in the United Kingdom.

The centre says anyone who has been "locked out" of their computer, likely has been subjected to a malware attack and will need to take steps to address the problem.

It says users should never click on a pop-up that claims your computer has a virus; update anti-virus software often and scan your computer for viruses regularly; don't click on links or attachments in emails sent to you by someone you don't know; turn on your browser's pop-up blocking feature; and never download anti-virus software from a pop-up or link sent to you in an email .
