Teens arrested in bomb threat hoax at Moosomin school
Two teenage girls were arrested in connection to a phony bomb threat that disrupted classes at a high school in Moosomin, Sask. RCMP say.
A nearby elementary school and a daycare were also affected.
"This matter is being taken very seriously," the local RCMP detachment said Friday in relation to the incident.
According to police, on Thursday at 12:10 p.m. CST, authorities were sent to McNaughton High School.
"A note was found by a student in the school saying there was a bomb that would go off in 24 hours," police said.
The school was cleared of staff and students, and locked down.
An RCMP explosives disposal unit and a sniffer dog were brought in to sweep the building.
"The nearby daycare and elementary schools were evacuated and neighbourhood residents adjacent to the school were notified of the threat as well," police said.
"Nothing was found in the sweep and the decision was made to keep the school closed past the 24 hour deadline," police added.
On Thursday night, RCMP said a tip came in that led them to arrest two 15-year-old girls, students at the high school.
"Police have confirmed that the note was a hoax and this matter is still under investigation," police said.
"This incident was considered real until such time as it was confirmed a hoax," RCMP said, noting that authorities spent a lot of time and money on the incident, although the total cost was not available.
"Not only was school temporarily suspended, fire department and police resources were deployed at a cost to the public and families and businesses were disrupted as parents responded to calls to collect the evacuated students," police said.
They added they are working with school division authorities on the issue.
Moosomin is about 212 kilometres east of Regina.
