MS State student abduction a hoax, university says

Image
HOOVER, AL (WBRC) - The reported abduction of a Mississippi State student was a hoax, according to a release from the university. A Mississippi State student reported today that she was abducted at gunpoint near her college residence and forced to drive to Hoover overnight. "When interviewed, the student recanted her account of events," Thomas Bourgeois, Dean of Students, said in the release. The student now faces charges for filing a false report. The woman told investigators that she called a friend during the incident to tell her what had happened. The student's friend then called police to alert them. Around 2:30 a.m., Mississippi State issued a text alert to the student body making them aware of the alleged abduction. The woman claimed that when she and her abductor arrived at the InTown Suites in Hoover, she was able to escape and call 9-1-1. MSU police, the FBI and other law enforcement agencies investigated the alleged abduction and determined today that i...

Santorum is at odds with his own church on environmental issues - Oregonian

Image
By Larry B. Stammer It has long been a maxim that mixing religion and politics can spell trouble. So when Rick Santorum told a partisan crowd in Columbus, Ohio, recently that President Obama's worldview was based on a "phony theology" that drives "radical environmentalists," he must have known his comments would reverberate far beyond his conservative political base. Santorum was speaking of efforts to forestall the worst effects of climate change through controls on greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels, and policies aimed at encouraging the development of renewable sources of energy. Obama, he said, was putting the Earth before the needs of humans. "It's about some phony ideal, some phony theology." That theology, he said, was not "based on the Bible." At another point, he rejected as unproven the findings of the vast majority of the world's reputable scientists that humans are accelerating climate change. Climate change, he c...

Hoaxer warns of drugs

Image
A new internet hoax is doing the rounds in New Zealand, warning parents to be aware of sugar-coated methamphetamine tablets being offered in schools. The hoax claims the tablets, Strawberry Quick, look like children's lollies and smell like strawberries. It warns parents to tell their children not to take lollies from anyone, including their class mates, because the disguised lollies are crystal methamphetamine, which can kill. Constable Michelle Stagg, of Blenheim, said parents should dismiss the information. While a form of methamphetamine called Strawberry Quick existed, the warnings in the message were highly exaggerated and inaccurate. "The claims in these misleading messages should not be taken seriously, it is basically an internet hoax," Miss Stagg said. The hoax was spreading quickly around the country and had previously received publicity around the world, she said. - The Marlborough Express Email Facebook MySpace Digg StumbleUpon Delicio...

Inhofe writes book on 'hoax' of global warming

Image
Still, the Oklahoma Republican believes his work is not done. Next week, the senator said his plans for the book's introduction include interviews with several broadcast personalities known for being on the other side of the debate. Published by WND Books, which described it as a coup de grace to the global-warming movement, the book is titled "The Greatest Fake," with the subtitle "How the Global Warming Conspiracy Threatens Your Future." "The timing couldn't be better," Inhofe said Friday in an interview. What those on the other side of the debate failed to do with legislation, he said, they will now try to accomplish through regulation. In the scenario explained by Inhofe, that could be much worse. He also warned that a ruling in a key court case later this year could open the way for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to use the Clean Air Act to have jurisdiction over not only industries but even church facilities. Inhofe said the econ...

Phony Hapeville city workers target elderly women for burglary

Image
HAPEVILLE, GA (CBS ATLANTA) - Police are on the lookout for burglars targeting elderly women. It's happened twice in the past 10 days. Thieves posing as city employees are getting into homes and making off with thousands of dollars in jewelry. Investigators said that a couple of guys driving a white extended cab pickup truck are claiming to work for the city of Hapeville in order to gain access to people's homes. "There's all kinds of scam artists out there," said Hapeville resident Bob Braxton. Braxton's 80-year-old neighbor didn't want to go on camera, but she said the crooks talked with her in her backyard. While one had her distracted, the other crook stole a sack full of priceless family heirlooms. "She found a pin on her bathroom floor, went to her jewelry box and discovered all of her jewelry had been stolen," said Braxton. Hapeville police said it was the second scam like this in their jurisdiction since Valentine's Day, and i...
