It is the second hoax alert in the area in two days.
On Thursday morning, an item was discovered close to a local convenience store on the Crumlin Road.
The road was closed at its junction with the Ligoneil Road, Ballysillan Road and Bilston Road - but has since re-opened to traffic.
During the alert, residents were advised to evacuate their homes or move to the back of the properties.
Ligoneil Leisure Centre was opened for those who have opted to leave their homes.
On Wednesday, a controlled explosion was carried out in the same area when a suspect device was discovered strapped to the railings opposite Our Lady of Mercy school. It was later described as "an elaborate hoax."
SDLP Councillor Nichola Mallon expressed her concern at the second day of disruption in the area.
"It is unclear whether this is a viable device or an elaborate hoax like yesterday, but either way, this act is the second consecutive attempt in two days to scare and disrupt shop keepers, residents and commuters during rush hour on the Bailsman Road," she said.
"Yesterday a suspect device was attached to railings opposite a school. Today a second suspect device has been attached to the lamp post outside a busy local shop.
"This is utter madness. I would urge anyone with information to contact the PSNI. A third day of this craziness cannot be allowed to happen".
Elsewhere on Thursday, police attended the scene of a security alert in Newtownabbey.
The alert at Forthill Drive in Ballyduff was also declared a hoax.
