MS State student abduction a hoax, university says
The reported abduction of a Mississippi State student was a hoax, according to a release from the university.
A Mississippi State student reported today that she was abducted at gunpoint near her college residence and forced to drive to Hoover overnight.
"When interviewed, the student recanted her account of events," Thomas Bourgeois, Dean of Students, said in the release. The student now faces charges for filing a false report.
The woman told investigators that she called a friend during the incident to tell her what had happened. The student's friend then called police to alert them. Around 2:30 a.m., Mississippi State issued a text alert to the student body making them aware of the alleged abduction.
The woman claimed that when she and her abductor arrived at the InTown Suites in Hoover, she was able to escape and call 9-1-1.
MSU police, the FBI and other law enforcement agencies investigated the alleged abduction and determined today that it was a hoax.
"Student safety is a serious issue and one of our top priorities, and this false report has caused unnecessary alarm and anxiety for our campus community," Bourgois said. He added, "We do, however, want to remind students that they should always be aware of their surroundings and be alert to conditions that may be cause for alarm."
