UK & World News: Man remanded on airport hoax charge

A 40-year-old man has been remanded in custody when he appeared in court charged with making a hoax bomb threat at Stansted Airport.

Paul Jackson, 40, of Infirmary Street, Blackburn, Lancashire, appeared at Blackburn Magistrates' Court to answer a charge of communicating false information, a spokeswoman for Lancashire Police said.

He is alleged to have made a call warning that a van was on its way to the Essex airport with explosives on board on Friday morning.

A second man, also aged 40 and from Blackburn, was also arrested in connection with the offence but has been released without charge.

Jackson will appear in court again on Monday.

A spokesman for the airport said: "Patrols were increased yesterday morning at Stansted Airport following information received by police from another force.

"This was precautionary and in line with established practice.

"The airport remained open and operated as normal."
