NYC man ran pleads guilty in Return-A-Pet scam

NEW YORK (AP) - A New York City man has pleaded guilty to fraud charges in a half-million dollar scam that promised to reunite owners with their lost pets.

Eric Stein entered the plea Wednesday in Manhattan federal court. He was arrested in January on charges that he ran the ruse from June 2007 to January 2010 through a fraudulent Manhattan-based company called Return-A-Pet.

Prosecutors say he operated the company while free on supervised release after he was convicted in an investment fraud scheme in Nevada.

They said the 53-year-old Stein sold sham "distributorships" for upfront fees of up to $ 50,000.

They said he sold distributorships to individuals who lived all over the United States and abroad, including in Texas, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina and South Africa.

Sentencing was scheduled for June 13.
